Career Academy South Bend Reopening Information Fall 2020
To families of our students at Career and Success Academy:
We hope you are enjoying the summer and that you and your family are safe and healthy. You
are probably apprehensive and have many questions about your child(ren) returning to school on August 10 . We hope this letter answers some of your questions and concerns.
We have studied the Indiana Department of Education and CDC recommendations, consulted with the St. Joseph County Health Department and read many other recommendations by education and safety professionals. As you know, we have also surveyed our families to understand your concerns and views.
Taking into consideration all of this and to best meet your needs, we have decided to offer two options for your child to attend school this August: In-Person Education Modified for COVID or Online Education. Further details on these options are provided below.
So that we can plan, we are asking you to tell us by July 15 , whether you are selecting In-
Person Education or Online Education. Decisions will be for the first semester, and unless circumstances change, students will remain in that option. Please use the following link https://forms.gle/jX71BHR69YXvwiy77 to make your selection.
Although we have tried to anticipate every situation, none of us have ever gone through this before. There will be changes in recommendations from the state and local agencies. In addition, we will see policies and processes that we need to change. We ask for your help and support as we work towards some level of normalcy.
Our driving concern is the safety of your child in addition to providing the best educational opportunity we can within the COVID constraints. Career and Success Academy is pleased to announce our E-Learning for the 2020-21 school year.
E-Learning will be course work online at home. This option will require additional parental support and will include:
Online curriculum will be created by certified and experienced teachers bringing together best practices for online learning at Career and Success Academy.
Curriculum will be personalized for each student to the extent possible and will be rigorous and interactive.
Curriculum will cover English language arts, math, science, and history with more options for electives like music and art.
Online learning will be a more comprehensive approach compared to the E-Learning last year.
Parents and guardians will need to be available to schedule a block of time daily with their online teacher to support small group interventions and differentiation. Our teachers will have flexible hours dependent upon parent schedules and availability. Parents will work closely with the teacher to help facilitate daily lessons, watch progress, and modify the student’s schedule as needed.
Special education services will be provided as determined by individual case conference committee decisions.
Teachers will provide individual and small group assistance and tutoring as necessary.
Students also have the option of attending Career or Success Academy at our brick and mortar schools.

The CASB/SASB central administration met this week to determine the final day of eLearning/school work for the 19-20 school year.
We will continue our schedule of three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), from now until May 22.
Friday, May 22, 2020 will be the last day of eLearning.
At this time we are still working on the details of computer collection, locker clean out, and graduation.
All information will be communicated to parents and guardians as soon as the decisions have been finalized.
Seniors. Our intent is to honor the class of 2020 and their accomplishments throughout the end of this school year. One of the ways we would like to accomplish this goal is by highlighting seniors on the school’s social media pages. If this is something you are interested in, please send the following information to firstname.lastname@example.org:

Senior Graduation. We plan for graduation to still be May 30 at 2 pm. We are working out the details and will get that information to the Senior Families as soon as all the details have been worked out.
Graduation Cap and Gown Pick Up. Graduation cap and gown pick up will be Wednesday, May 6 from 2pm to 6pm. Please read this closely and follow all information:
For the safety of all involved and to keep this “Drive Thru, Pick-Up” as efficient as possible, please follow the steps below!
Drive through the car drop-off line to the backside of the cafeteria. NO ONE IS ALLOWED OUT OF YOUR CAR.
This is a no-contact delivery. Remain in your vehicle, roll down your window, and provide the delivery team with your student’s name.
The products will be placed in the passenger side, trunk, or back seat. You are to leave campus after pick up.

Students to continue E-Learning until the end of the school year.
The State Superintendent for Public Instruction, Dr. Jennifer McCormick, alongside Governor Eric Holcomb, have announced that all Indiana schools will remain closed through the end of the school year, providing at least 20 more days of remote learning from April 2, 2020. You can read the press release here. This is difficult for us all and a great loss – for teachers who miss their students, students who miss their teachers, graduating seniors, and many others who are impacted. We are all here to support each other in this confusing time.
Those students who were on track to graduate, and who complete the remainder of remote E-learning, will be able to successfully graduate this year. All 9th-11th graders must still continue to earn credits through E-learning. Additional guidance will be directly communicated to all students and families soon.
While this is not the outcome any of us wanted, we support these safety measures and will continue to be here to serve our CASB/SASB families in every way possible. Thank you to our teachers and staff who have worked tirelessly to make this a seamless transition, to our students who have taken this in stride and continue to make us proud, and to our families for their teamwork and patience.

Schools Closed until May 1st by order of the Indiana Governor
We are grateful for your continued patience and involvement as we navigate through these unprecedented times for our school, our community, and our country.
Our primary focus at this time is to maintain the health and wellness of our students, families, and staff, while supporting continued learning. Please be advised that both Career and Success Academy will be closed until May 1st, 2020 by order of the Governor of Indiana. Read the official announcement here.
It is possible this date may be revised to extend through the end of the 2019-2020 school year if circumstances warrant. The Indiana Department of Education has canceled all state mandated assessments for this academic year. Read more about state testing here

All Special Education programs and services will continue to be provided through our eLearning platforms during this time. Please reach out to your child’s Teacher of Record if you have any questions or need assistance. A message from the SASB Principal:
I can’t thank you all enough. All but 55 IPADS have been picked-up and we have seen so much success on day one of eLearning. If you are having any issues, please be sure to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Should you have technical issues please email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org and a representative of our Tech Team will be available for troubleshooting.
I want to thank our amazing teachers at Success Academy. I do believe we have the best staff and the best teachers here at Success and am so very proud of how they have tackled this difficult situation.
Please remember that we are still offering Grab and Go breakfast and lunches at Success Academy for ALL students under 18 every Tuesday and Thursday from 11-12. Enter Success Academy through Door B.
I want to remind parents how beneficial it is keeping your children on a consistent schedule. An idea might be waking up every day at 8:00. Having breakfast and free time from 8:00 – 9:00. Starting eLearning from 9:00 – 11:00. Breaking for lunch and free time from 11:00 – 12:00, and then finishing up eLearning from 12:00 – 1:30. You may find a different schedule works for your family which is perfectly fine.
Please know that we care deeply about our children and their families. Please be safe and stay healthy. I will continue to reach out throughout this extended elearning time.

E-Learning for SASB/CASB
E-Learning assignments will be posted for all classes by 9:00 am on MWF. We are not following traditional block scheduling during this time. Students will have every class during eLearning workdays. Teacher “office hours” will be from 9-3 on MWF, during which time they will be available to answer all questions. On Tuesday and Thursday there will be no new e-Learning assignments, giving students the opportunity to complete work from the previous day or prepare for the next day.

Device and personal item pick up
The buildings will be OPEN from 9am-4pm on Tuesday, March 17, for students and/or guardians to pick up personal items or to check out a school device for the student’s use during school closure.
The buildings will be CLOSED at end of day Tuesday, March 17, and will not reopen during this closure. This is to comply with the CDC recommendations and to allow for deep cleaning and sanitization through every area of the buildings.

A Message from the SASB School Principal:
Since we will have eLearning for an extended period of time, we are allowing parents to check out an IPAD and charger anytime Tuesday, March 17 from 9:00 – 4:00 should it be needed for eLearning. Simply come into Success Academy, go directly to your child’s grade level flex, sign the check-out form and leave with the IPAD and charger. This IPAD, charger and keyboard will need to be returned when school resumes and you, the parent, will be responsible for this device and charger. This is also a time when you can stop by the nurse’s office to pick up your child’s medicine if needed.
Class Dojo will be used by all teachers to distribute academic information and track attendance. Teachers will need to set up accounts with students. We will have the Dojo App on all our IPADS to make this process even easier. Should you be using your own device you can simply download Class Dojo or sign-in through Google, however, I strongly recommend students using our IPADS as the Apps are already on the IPAD
We will need to track attendance each day for eLearning. Teachers will be sending out a Class Dojo message each Monday, Wednesday and Friday by 9:00am each morning of eLearning days. Students will need to respond in order for the classroom teacher to track attendance.

Parents and Guardians,
You received information about Career Academy’s decision to close school for the foreseeable future. We wanted to get information to you regarding how we plan to monitor eLearning assignments for students and staff.
New Assignments will be posted to Canvas from all of your students’ teachers by 9 am on the designated eLearning Days.
Attendance will be taken through Canvas as well. Students will take a quiz through their advisory class indicating their attendance. Please make sure students are doing this because follow up phone calls and emails will come out around noon.
eLearning Days will be on Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Friday’s. We are not following the traditional block day schedule during this time. All classes will post assignments that are designed to be around 20 minutes per class. Students will complete all 8 classes each eLearning day.
Tuesday’s and Thursday’s will be student workdays to complete work from the previous day.

If a student has left a computer, computer charger, medicine, band instruments, etc. in the building, administrators will at CASB on Tuesday, March 17 from 9 to 4. After March 17, the building will be closed and inaccessible.
Grab and Go Lunches will be served at Success Academy between 11:00 and 12:00 on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Lunches can be picked up SASB at Door B.

As the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to spread throughout the United States, the Career and Success Academy has continued to monitor the situation through review of local, state, and national health agency reports. As expected, COVID-19 is now in Indiana and the Michiana area and has been identified in every bordering state. While there are currently no reported or suspected cases of COVID-19 within either school, we must continue to take precautions safeguarding the health of all members of the CASB/SASB community.
We, as a district, are enacting an extended school closure until at least April 10th. We will continue to assess the situation and determine when students are able to return. All sporting events, extracurricular activities or any other school-related functions are also canceled.
This closure begins Monday, March 16, with the eLearning day as previously scheduled. During this extended closure, students will not attend school but will complete their eLearning assignments from home. Information regarding eLearning schedule, requirements, and technology will be forthcoming from the school principals.
We understand the difficulty this causes for our families and will continue to work together to protect and serve our students. As a community, we all share the responsibility of keeping our school district safe and healthy. We will continue to provide additional information as questions arise.
