Language Arts Instruction

Grades K-2
Instruction in literacy for Grades K-2 will focus on the following Foundational strategies

  • Focus on essential skills, strategies, and concepts
  • Differentiated instruction based on assessment results and adapted to meet students’ needs
  • Explicit and systematic instruction with lots of practice—with and without teacher support and feedback, including cumulative practice over time
  • Opportunities to apply skills and strategies in reading and writing meaningful text with teacher support
  • Monitoring student progress regularly to facilitate learning—rather than coverage—of content

Grades 3-5
Instruction in literacy for Grades 3-5 will focus on the following strategies

  • Target Priority concepts & skills found in standards
  • Use formative assessments effectively
  • Provide practice and application
  • Ensure students are actively engaged
  • Balance support with productive struggle
  • Reading and writing daily
  • Small group instruction focusing on differentiation

Math Instruction

Grades K-2
Instruction in mathematics for Grades K-2 will focus on the following Foundational strategies

  • Explicit instruction with a focus on conceptual and procedural knowledge
  • Practice and review built in
  • Progress monitoring
  • Understanding patterns and measurement
  • Developing a solid understanding of number sense
  • Small group instruction that will be data driven
  • Differentiated instruction that is rigorous and based on data

Grades 3-5
Instruction in mathematics for Grades 3-5 will focus on the following strategies

  • Explicit instruction with a focus on conceptual and procedural knowledge
  • Practice and review built in
  • Progress monitoring
  • Developing and investigate solutions to everyday problem
  • Focusing on the relationship between addition and multiplication and subtraction and division
  • Develop an interest in math
  • Small group instruction that will be data driven
  • Differentiated and rigorous instruction based on data

Resources

Language arts teachers will use the IN State Standards to guide their teaching. Standards will be taught using the following resources: Reach for Reading, Wilson Phonics, Heggerty Phonemic Awareness, Fountas & Pinell Guided Reading, Marzano Academic Vocabulary, High Frequency Words, IReady, RazzKids and various apps and materials to provoke critical thinking to meet students’ needs.

Math teachers will use the IN State Standards to guide their teaching. Standards will be taught using the following resources: Math in Focus, Marzano Academic Vocabulary, IReady, Jo Boaler Number Sense research, manipulatives and various apps and materials to provoke critical thinking to meet students’ needs.
